Suing for a PIT Maneuver in Georgia

PoliceCrash

On July 9th, 2026, WTOC reported that a Georgia court had dismissed 27 DUI cases due to ongoing investigations into state troopers. These law enforcement officers face allegations of intentionally ramming other vehicles and filing fraudulent personal injury lawsuits in Georgia. What if you were injured during an intentional PIT maneuver carried out by police in Georgia? Can you sue?

Troopers Face Damning Allegations

The troopers involved in this scandal went viral in March after the details of their scheme became public. An internal investigation determined that these now-terminated troopers intentionally rammed other vehicles. While all motorists were legitimate suspects fleeing from law enforcement, one might argue that the troopers had a financial incentive to carry out the PIT maneuvers.

This financial incentive stems from the massive payouts they were receiving by filing personal injury claims through a local attorney in Georgia. Often, the troopers would claim questionable damages such as stress and anxiety, pursuing the policy limit of $25,000 each time. This has become known as the “PIT for Pay” scandal. Both troopers involved in this scandal cumulatively received almost $100,000 in total, and more law enforcement officers are currently under investigation.

Family Sues for Fatal PIT Maneuver in Georgia

On June 23rd, 2026, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that a family was filing a wrongful death lawsuit over a fatal PIT maneuver in Cobb County. The fatal collision occurred in 2024, when a police officer initiated a pursuit over a broken headlight and a stop sign violation. Despite committing only minor traffic offenses, the driver lost his life after the officer carried out a PIT maneuver.

The family of the 21-year-old victim claims that this should never have happened. They pointed out that the officer involved had just begun his career as a law enforcement officer, and he probably didn’t have the necessary training or experience to pull off a PIT maneuver safely. The PIT for Pay scandal certainly adds some context here, and it would be interesting to learn whether the officer involved had any connection with the scheme.

These lawsuits are not rare in Georgia. In 2025, another victim sued the Cobb County police for almost killing them during a PIT maneuver. The victim claims that there was no legal justification for the dangerous tactic, and she had her right arm amputated as a result of the collision. While PIT maneuvers can sometimes stop dangerous suspects, officers must be wary of collateral damage when pursuing suspects.

While these law enforcement officers might have attempted to file fraudulent personal injury lawsuits, the shoe is now on the other foot. The victims of these wild, reckless officers should now consider legal action against the police departments and individuals behind these intentional ramming attacks. Some are already in the process of taking action. Discuss your options by contacting Georgia car accident lawyers at Morain & Buckelew, LLC.
